Author Laura Lavayén's book, "Illegals" (published by Trafford Publishing), has just been selected for inclusion in Trafford's Gold Seal program, which recognizes excellence in writing and overall potential.

"Illegals" chronicles the journeys of a group of fictional illegal immigrants to the United States. According to a December 2013 report published by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in 2012 alone, 643,000 foreign nationals were detained. Seventy percent of those apprehended were Mexican citizens, DHS says.

The story unfolds in the city of Philadelphia, where married couple Mariana and Pedro live under temporary worker status. Yet their stay in America is deemed illegal when they try to apply for permanent U.S. residency.

Mariana and Pedro's story comes to involve coyotes - illegal immigrant smugglers - along with a detective, document forgers, a determined lawyer and other illegal immigrant characters whose time in the United States is also plagued by uncertainty.

Praise for "Illegals":

"Between the sympathetic victims and the tireless efforts of Darcy to find his suspect and give the illegal immigrants he has tracked down a chance at remaining in America, there are plenty of characters to like. ...This book will be best enjoyed by those who like their suspense served with a dash of honest humanity."

- Michael Radon, The U.S. Review of Books
