Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner. The mere mention of the popular Mexican holiday is enough to evoke screams of festive joy from all corners of the U.S.
"It's scary to suddenly realize that most of us don't even know what we're celebrating," states Mark Frobose, bestselling author of the blockbuster audio program, "Spanish for Travel and Eating Out".
Millions of Americans ask the same question every May 5th.
"What is Cinco de Mayo anyway?"
To answer that question, Language Audiobooks founder Mark Frobose offers some sobering facts to this unsober party holiday that are worth noting.
According to Mark, who offers free Spanish lessons on his website, the biggest truth that most Americans don't realize is that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day.
"Mexico's real Independence Day is September 16th," says Frobose, creator of the bestselling audio program "Bite-Sized Spanish in Ten Minutes a Day".
So what is Cinco de Mayo supposed to be celebrating?
"Cinco de Mayo" commemorates the Mexican victory over French troops that occupied Mexico at the Battle of Puebla when Benito Juarez was their general," responds Frobose.
That's news to most Americans. But there's more.
According to Frobose, Cinco de Mayo is not really celebrated as a holiday in Mexico.
"I don't want to shock anyone, but the best place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo is in the United States and not in Mexico," Mark explains. "They don't really celebrate the holiday very much south of the border."
Mark created Language Audiobooks to provide a viable alternative to Rosetta Stone. "I feel that people need to be liberated from their computers so that they can learn to speak languages everywhere they go," he says.
