Chronicling the events leading up to author Lance Shabazz's decision to walk away from the Nation of Islam, the new book "Blood Sweat & Tears: The Nation of Islam and Me" (published by Lulu) tells the poignant story of his 50 years spent living in and learning about the Islamic faith.
"I am a lifetime Muslim who grew up in the Nation of Islam," Shabazz says. "My dissatisfaction with the present state of the Nation of Islam caused me to produce a television program, The Lance Shabazz Show. The show was my therapy, but this book is my medicine."
"Blood Sweat & Tears" showcases Shabazz's journey from a young boy who gave up everything to participate in the movement to an adult male discontented by changes in the leadership of the Nation of Islam.
When Shabazz was young, the Nation of Islam was headed by Elijah Muhammad. Shabazz felt a shift in his faith's resolve when leadership was transferred from Elijah Muhammad to his son, Wallace D. Muhammad, in 1975. This book relays Shabazz's experiences so that readers may "be free from organized religion," as he is now.
