TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - According to the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, a specialized organization for suicide prevention, over 40000 Americans take their own lives every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out that about 50% of these deaths can be attributed to depression. Notably, those who have suicidal tendencies are less likely to seek professional help. In light of the alarming statistics and the continued risks that may silently plague friends and family members, the late author LaTanya R. Winston penned "The Journey of Deliverance" (published by Xlibris). This eye-opening memoir of her own struggles with depression and self-mutilation bares the many realities of the disease that are often met with malice and social stigma.
"The Journey of Deliverance" shares an ordinary woman's extraordinary story of a 'battle against oneself.' The book gives readers an inside look into the inner thoughts and perspectives of someone who has lived through the experience. It reveals much on the nature of depression, the unruly episodes of feeling futile and down, inexplicable forlorn attitudes and frequent thoughts of suicide. Most importantly, it encourages positivism amidst the haul of negative energy that seeks to dominate the life of the depressed. It explains why one should hold on to the light and just let God work his way to one's ultimate healing. It is a book that heartrendingly captures the horrors of the disease and the beauty of re-living.
Poignant, moving and exegetic, Winston's story aims to give hope to those who suffer from depression and suicide thoughts. It seeks to let them know how much precious their life is to God and to the people around them. "The Journey of Deliverance" is published posthumously after Winston passed away suddenly at her home on April 2, 2014 from complications of surgery.
