Over 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV, reports the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, with more than 50,000 Americans becoming newly infected each year. In addition, more than 15,000 people die of AIDS every year in the US.
Despite these bleak statistics, assistant nurse Josefina Guardia makes it her mission to help AIDS patients take their final breath with dignity. Her new book, "Living Hell: The Truth about AIDS and HIV" (published by iUniverse), shares the inspiring stories of the patients Guardia nursed, showcasing their courage and strength in the face of death.
"Living Hell" presents the realities of HIV and AIDS from Guardia's perspective. She recounts the stories of her patients, recalling how they became infected and how their families reacted. Guardia includes advice for patients as well as their families, reminding them how important their support is to their loved one.
Through "Living Hell," Guardia aims to honor those who have lost their lives to AIDS and encourage more discussion about the disease. She hopes her readers will feel these patients' pain and see the humanity in their stories.
