TUSCON, Ariz.
A big city physician moves his family to a rural Kansas farm in Stephen A. Klotz's new novel, "Land of Canaan" (published by Lulu), which pays homage to honesty, hard work and perseverance of character.
Presented as a series of short vignettes, "Land of Canaan" recounts the adventures of the Heimat family. The head of the family, Dr. Heimat, acquiesces to his wife's desire to move to a farm. He is soon embroiled with the wily folk of rural eastern Kansas as well as his children, some of whom cannot wait to begin feeding chickens and ducks and larger farm animals.
Klotz deftly reveals the eccentricities of the Heimat's neighbors and some of the visitors to the farm are portrayed. The grass and woodlands of Kansas eventually vanish along with the unique country folk to be replaced by two- and three-story homes on tree-lined avenues. The book is illustrated throughout with ink wash drawings, bringing the characters and scenery to life.
"I would like readers to understand the love for the land (and the animals) that the farmers possessed," Klotz says. "It is perhaps the truly oldest profession of mankind, i.e., farming or providing for oneself."

About the Author
Stephen A. Klotz is an infectious disease physician with the University of Arizona in Tucson. He grew up in Johnson County, Kansas, in the 1950s and '60s on a farm. His family moved from a suburban home onto an eastern Kansas farm and tried to fit in with the stoic, neighboring farmers. In his farming career, Klotz was particularly proud of his purebred swineherd and large flock of Suffolk sheep, both of which helped pay his way through college. He is also the author of "Jewel Box Biographies."
