The U.S. National Library of Medicine defines gender identity disorder as "a conflict between a person's physical gender and the gender he or she identifies as." Someone physically identified as a boy may actually feel and act like a girl, or vice versa, and may be very uncomfortable with the gender he or she was born in. Author Kylie Rae gives an autobiographical account of this life in It's Not Who I Am, covering her experiences with gender dysphoria from her early youth up to her adulthood.

Across the world, gender issues, particularly those pertaining to LGBT matters, are highly politicized and subject to much partisan debate. The argumentations of ideologues, politicians and pundits, however, seldom capture the scope of the experiences of those affected by gender dysphoria. Thus, Rae's sincere recollection of her life and the situations she encountered with the people around her - from the open-minded and understanding to the prejudiced and unreasonable - are of utmost import in conveying the conditions likewise faced by countless others in a similar position as the author.

Many may not be able to speak openly, their voices unheard amidst the political haranguing in the media and the tone-deafness of unsympathetic majorities, but this only makes it more crucial to impart to the general population the message Rae brings in It's Not Who I Am. Her work can foster greater understanding and tolerance, particularly amongst those unaware of what those affected by gender dysphoria undergo in their everyday lives.

It's Not Who I Am is not only the author's story; it is also the story of innumerable others silenced throughout history by societies plagued by prejudice and ignorance. Rae's work is a fracture in the wall of intolerance that allows the light of reason and understanding to pierce through. Those with similar gender experiences and, even more importantly, those who have none, will find this book to be a great insight into one of the most crucial social issues of the age, as seen through the life of a South Australian woman.
