In the late 18th century the notorious Spanish pirate, Jose Gasper, ruled the Southwest corridor of Florida. His lasting impact on the region is commemorated every year when Florida residents host their annual Gasparilla festival in his honor. Susan Wolf Johnson uses this haunting and mysterious holiday as the backdrop to her fictional work "King Daniel: Gasparilla King of the Pirates."

In "King Daniel" the city of Tampa prepares to celebrate the famous Gasparilla festival amid the social and political upheaval that gripped the early 1970s. The Westcott family finds themselves at the center of attention when the recently crowned king of the festival, Daniel Westcott, goes missing. Daniel's granddaughter, Becca, returns to Tampa to help her family cope with the loss of her grandfather, but instead is plunged into the middle of the investigation when secret diaries appear on her doorstep. While the town searches for the missing Daniel, Becca uncovers the truth about her family's scandalous past.

"When I moved to Tampa I was immediately intrigued with the Gasparilla festivities, and over the years my family became more and more involved with the various holiday events," Wolf Johnson said. "There is already so much folklore and mystery surrounding the holiday, that I knew it would make the perfect setting for a story. My goal with "King Daniel" is to showcase the Gasparilla festival while readers try to solve the mystery of the Westcott family."
