According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute.
Situations like this can cause people to turn to desperate measures to escape including theft, drugs or running away. In his new novel, "Victims of Circumstance" Kenneth Johnson outlines the life of a young married couple that battle jealousy, betrayal and misplaced trust.
"My novel is the classic story about a man who falls in love with a woman way out of his league," Johnson said. "But when things get out of control, the married couple struggle to get the happily-ever-after part of marriage right."
Johnson's novel isn't afraid of hitting hard-to-talk-about subjects, such as how common rape is in our society today and the way drugs can cause unpredictable behavior from loved ones.
"The story gets at the real problems couples face," Johnson said. "My own experiences with love and divorce have helped me craft a very genuine relationship between my main characters."
