When Kelly Garner suffered a devastating fall, it was the community of family, friends, neighbors and even strangers that picked him up literally and figuratively.
Garner, a Type 1 diabetic for 41 years, was helping stranded drivers during a snowstorm when his blood sugar dropped. As he was walking home, he became disoriented and fell into a 40-foot ravine that left him stranded more than 12 hours in single degree temperatures. He broke seven ribs, fractured a vertebra and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
The community helped organize a search party and raised money for his rehabilitation. During his recovery, multiple doctors and nurses also provided support as he trained for a lifelong goal of running a half marathon. Garner completed the race less than a year after his fall and finished the only way he knew how: with his surgical team at his side.
In his new book, "The Night That Changed Our Lives," he describes how his faith in God saved him during his accident and rehabilitation. He also details the race that inspired the local area.
"I want others to see that God is alive and well," Garner said. "He has a plan for all of us."
His inspirational story also resonated with the state of Alabama. In 2015, the Alabama House of Representatives honored him at the statehouse. By sharing his story, he aims to inspire fellow diabetics and help people strengthen their relationship with God.
"Never give up without a fight," Garner said. "Dig deep and you might find you have more inside that you didn't know you had."
