KIRKLAND, Wash.

When author Katie Doughty's daughter was born, she wanted to start setting examples of turning her dreams and goals into a reality by taking initiative and making them happen, so she decided to finally publish a book. The result of which is "Pat the Penguin and the Great Penguin Race" (published by Xlibris), a story inspired by her friend Pat who dressed up as a penguin for Halloween.

This story is about a clumsy penguin who is always slipping and sliding on his belly instead of walking upright like his very proper peers. When the Great Penguin Race approaches, Pat feels hopeless in competing, but receives training and encouragement from a good friend, Puddles. Will Pat be able to make it to the finish line without an embarrassing flop?

"I hope teachers and parents can use my writing to teach children about poetry, creative writing, vocabulary, word choice and voice. Being a teacher myself, I love to use picture books to teach writing. Kids can use my book as a model for their own writing," says the author.

Filled with colorful illustrations, "Pat the Penguin and the Great Penguin Race" is a rhyming story readers will enjoy. It will teach them about accepting others for who they are and changing their perspectives from negative to positive which are both very important qualtities to instill in children.
