SEACLIFF, N.Y.

The abduction of a young child and brutal slaying of his babysitter on a cold winter night in January 1990 have ramifications years later. The perpetrators are no ordinary men, however, because the victim has two bite marks in her neck. This new novel presents a story of revenge and centuries-old rivalry between vampires and immortal electro-kinetic psychics known as seers - including the child's mother.

Monica, a reporter, is working on an ongoing story about an increasing number of missing people when she sees a small woman fight off two attackers with a burst of light, helped by a mysterious man in black who jumps from a nearby building. That same man shows up the next day in her apartment, and he has a warning for the ambitious journalist: The men she saw work for a vampire known as Lived, and he's on a quest for vengeance. Now she's helping Drake, a vampire himself, who is working to atone for his own misdeeds centuries earlier.

The baby grew up, fed on lies to help him hate his own kind. Even as he works toward the culmination of the vampires' evil plan, the young man makes a shocking discovery and the true identity of his mentor is revealed, complete with a deception that has affected more lives than his own. A final battle will determine whether the seers or the vampires prevail and who will be collateral damage. "A Bolt of Crimson" brings its own spin to a traditional tale of light and evil starring creatures of the night.

Katherine Kranz, who writes film reviews for a newspaper, studied at the New York Film Academy. She lives in Long Island.
