K. Lee Washington Releases JOE'S TAP

In "Joe's Tap: The Story of Maurine and Tales of the Other Cape May" (published by iUniverse), author K. Lee Washington pulls up a stool for readers and entertains them with his new novel, which centers around the lives of the colorful patrons of a local bar.

Set in Washington's hometown of Cape May, N.J., "Joe's Tap" recreates the Jersey Shore of the 1950s and '60s for readers in this coming-of-age story.

Above Joe's Tap, a racially integrated bar owned by Joe and Mary, lives Maurine "Little Mo" Finch and her father, Mo. As she grows up, Maurine struggles with her own racial identity and learns to be comfortable in her own skin. With the support of Mary and Ella, her best friend, Maurine finds that love may be hiding where she least expects it.

"Joe's Tap" touches on themes of identity, love and acceptance, played out between a well-crafted cast of characters. Through his book, Washington hopes readers will see Cape May in a new light and be able to identify with Maurine's courage and resolve.

"I want folks to understand that Cape May was not always an exclusive Victorian vacation haven," writes Washington. "Real people lived there, in less than ostentatious imagery with demanding day-to-day problems."
