Julie McCulloch Burton looks for humor in life. For those who have precious little time to read but, more than anything, need a good laugh, her new book, "Mediocre: Making Fun of Life" (published by iUniverse), gives readers an inside look at her twist on life.
"It's like 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' meets 'Reader's Digest' meets 'Short Attention-Span Theatre,'" she jokes.
An excerpt from "Mediocre":
"Soon after I started my new job, a smart, kind and gentle coworker said that she liked my earrings.
"I replied, 'Thank you. These are probably my favorite pair because they were made with the ivory from the tusk of a mammoth.' She wondered out loud, 'Oh, I hope they didn't hurt the poor thing.'
"I briefly pondered my choices of how to break the news to my friend when I settled with this: I cupped my hands around my mouth and spoke as if into a bullhorn, 'Mammoths are extinct animals!'
"She sucked in a deep breath, turned a brand-new shade of red, and I didn't hear it, but I saw her thinking... Dammit."
