Every day, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates four zoos and an aquarium in New York City, cares for over 15,000 animals that children of all ages line up to see. As a teacher, Julie Holzer understands how important it is for children to interact and learn about animals. Her new children's book, "Maggie's Forever Home" (published by Trafford Publishing), introduces young readers to Maggie, a playful puppy who is looking for a home to call her own.
While playing in a field one day, Maggie finds herself very lost and all alone. She begins to wander and meets other animals who try to help her. When a little girl picks up Maggie and takes her to a shelter, Maggie wonders if she will ever find a permanent home.
An excerpt from "Maggie's Forever Home":
"Maggie the puppy is white with big black spots and lots of little polka dots. Maggie is a stray. She is all alone. Her best friend is a garbage can. She has no home. Then on a sunny day, Maggie went to the park to play."
Holzer hopes children will take away a greater understanding of animal cruelty and the need for compassion for all creatures. The colorful illustrations and rhyming prose will delight young readers. Holzer writes, "Kids will probably giggle!"
