According to the U.S. Department of Education, 14 percent of adults can't read. Retired teacher Judy Barnhart understands the importance of building a child's vocabulary from an early age to build a foundation for a successful, literate life. In her new alphabet book, "A Bunch of Cats" (published by Trafford Publishing), beginning readers will enjoy the playful cats and colorful pages while learning their ABCs along the way.

"Using my cats in this way is based on my background as a teacher of reading and the ever-present need to find relevant, interesting materials to use with early readers of all ages," explains Barnhart.

"A Bunch of Cats" teaches children their ABCs while following the playful antics of cats in daily, humorous situations through photographs. This charming book will help any child build his or her vocabulary skills, and parents will be entertained by the language and photos of the cats.

"The photos are taken from real life and therefore are unique to these particular cats," says Barnhart. "Also, the emphasis on vocabulary is not done in all alphabet books as it is done in this one."
