NEW YORK, September 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/
Josemaria Siota, managing director of Simastec Consulting, releases today his fourth book Linked Innovation with Palgrave Macmillan (Springer). The 61 conducted interviews reveal that "no single issue is higher on the agenda of research center Managing Directors than solving this question: how to achieve economic sustainability while preserving academic quality?"

Based on a four-year analysis of 3,881 centers in 107 countries, the author concludes that "linked innovation is the answer, whether the center operates in engineering or pharmaceuticals, or is even a business school." He examines leading institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, Roche, Google, Fraunhofer and NASA.
Most industries appear to require 3,000 raw ideas to produce one substantially new, commercially successful industrial product. Research centers making those discoveries are disappearing due to the scarcity of resources. These dead centers are not only at the university (14%) but also in industry (41%) and in government (45%).
On the one hand, although the spending on R&D over the GDP remained stable at 2.4% across OECD countries, corporations have not yet recovered precrisis levels of expenditure on R&D in many geographies, such as Finland, Japan and the United States.
On the other hand, investors are unwilling to take on long-term projects such as the discovery of new molecular entities, a R&D model that has an estimated success rate of less than 4%, a capitalized cost per launch of $1.78 billion and a cycle time of 13.5 years before launch.
To tackle this problem, Mr. Siota looks at the gaps in the innovation process, and proposes 12 business models and 28 best practices for driving growth in those centers, moving from broken to linked innovation. These mechanisms include translating discoveries into impact through design thinking, developing entrepreneurial academics, following lean-research principles, etc.
The book is ready on Springer and Amazon. Review copies are available through the publisher. The author is accessible, on LinkedIn and Twitter, for private interviews and public speaking.
