"This is the text for all midwives in their pursuit of lifelong learning, be they new or experienced clinicians," said author, Tekoa L. King. "It is the first revision of the classic text in more than a decade, with expanded content while maintaining goals and standards of previous editions."

With chapters written by a variety of expert midwives and an increased emphasis on reproductive anatomy and physiology, this new edition assists students and clinicians in understanding not only what to do but why.

"For more than thirty years, Varney's Midwifery has served the profession as its definitive resource. Now, it is up to the minute again. It is a great honor to publish such an esteemed work," said Bill Brottmiller, Executive Publisher, Jones & Bartlett Learning.

Updated to reflect evidence-based care, this edition also discusses the pathophysiology of various conditions in the context of normal changes in the reproductive cycle. Also included are numerous new anatomical and clinical illustrations. Interwoven throughout is information on primary care, gynecology, maternity care, and neonatal care.

"Varney's Midwifery, Fifth Edition is the midwifery text for the 21st century reflecting increased understanding of physiology, appreciation of a wide variety of treatments, and recognition of the expanding scope of practice of midwives today," said author, Mary C. Brucker.

In this edition, the skills chapters have been significantly revised and reformatted into relevant chapter appendices to help students, new midwives, and international readers learn essential skills in sequential steps. These critical midwifery skills include performing a pelvic examination, hand maneuvers for birth, delivery of a fetus in breech presentation, and current evidence-based steps for managing a postpartum hemorrhage.

New Chapters Include:

  • Professional Midwifery Today
  • Mental Health Conditions
  • Breast Conditions
  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Female Reproductive System
  • Physiologic Changes in Pregnancy and Fetal Development
  • Genetics
  • Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy: Placental, Fetal, and Maternal Adaptations
