In a tragic and disturbing, but often funny account of survival, the journey begins in a decaying house with a grandfather who thinks he is a train, an alcoholic father who has gone to see a man about a dog and a diminutive Scottish grandmother who has a deceptively powerful right punch. The boy suffers physical abuse and the horror of being locked in the cellar by his sister where the total darkness hides the ghost of a man who hanged himself in the toilet.

It goes on to say, "The title suggests a ghost story, but a boy witnessing firsthand the onset and evolution of a mental breakdown is as bloodcurdling as anything supernatural, perhaps more so."
