It is often noted that people come closest to God when faced with their own mortality. No one has more experience with this than members of the military during active duty.
Joel Russell is a Vietnam veteran who saw his group of 250 marines cut down to only 79 in less than four hours in one mission. As Russell saw death closing around him, he had what he calls his “burning bush experience.â€'
“As I watched my troop falling around me,â€' Russell said. “I made a promise to God that I would dedicate my life to him if I survived, and I experienced an immediate moment of clarity.â€'
Russellâ€s new book, “The Book of Joel, Book II,â€' is a play on the “Book of Joelâ€' from the Bible, but represents the full life of one marine and his journey to God.
“The Book of Joel, Book IIâ€' reveals Russellâ€s traumatic childhood, the decisions that led him to the marines, his battles with mental illness and how finding God has changed his life. This autobiography is part history, part war insight and all deeply personal.
