Joe Conceicao Explores History of Kristang People in LOVE AND WAR IN OLD MALACA

With "Love and War in Old Malaca: A Historical Novel" (published by Trafford Publishing), Joe Conceicao's new e-book, readers take a look 500 years into the past in a story about the Portuguese conquistadors who landed in Malacca in 1511.

According to Conceicao, the conquistadors grabbed the rich emporium from the Malay Sultan, ushering in over a century of strife. He explains that there is still a small population of Kristang people. Kristang, he says, is a Creole language which is fading in use, a well-known culinary art and a hopping dance rhythm and tune which still gets occasional mainstream attention. Conceicao comes from that community.

"Love and War in Old Malaca" shows how the Kristang people found their external foes constantly forcing them to stay within the impregnable fortress they lived in. Conceicao explains how the settlers met their joys and struggles. "The tale is worth telling," he says, "because, today remains of Portuguese culture, however ragged, may be found scattered over the shores of Africa and Asia, as recent research has shown."

Conceicao also works to bring attention to modern Kristang people. "'Love and War in Old Malaca' engages interest by the telling of the unfolding of history where there is still touristic evidence in Malacca, as in the famous ruined remnant gate belonging to the Portuguese fortress named A Famosa," he says.
