Nine years ago, Jodi Bainter received a phone call that no parent wants to hear: Her 3-year old son, Jacob, had been the victim of a horrific accident; run over by a riding lawnmower driven by his father, Brett. A split-second altered the course of their lives and served as a catalyst for inner-growth, faith and perseverance.
Everyone has had that one moment of sheer grief - a feeling of helplessness and vulnerability so powerful that it is virtually impossible to imagine the future seeming any brighter. Jodi Bainter's story serves as a beacon of hope that even in the darkest of times you can find beauty in the face of tragedy.
Following the accident, Jake endured 15 surgeries over the course of four years to salvage his severely damaged leg. His childhood was replaced by pain and medical procedures. Eventually, Jodi and Brett were forced to ponder a previously unthinkable alternative: elective surgery to amputate Jake's right leg from the knee down.
Told from journal entries and Jodi's memory of the event, "Make it Morning" is the journey of a family's fight to cope and endure under unthinkable circumstances. Visceral and emotive, Bainter's words and photos encapsulate Jacob's arduous journey, and a family's struggle to put the pieces back together and begin anew.
Today, Jodi Bainter shares her inspirational family's story through speaking engagements and in 2011, she co-founded the A3 Foundation, a nonprofit organization to provide prosthetics and resources to amputees. She an advocate for lawn mower safety and actively involved in the amputee community. Jodi was born and raised in Bay City, Mich., and is a graduate of Central Michigan University. She has enjoyed a great career for the last 15 years at the Walt Disney Company. Jodi, Brett and Jake live in Orlando, Fla.
