Kelowna, British Columbia
As a teacher, author Joanne Swain has observed that there are very few books about animals that can be used to develop children's research skills. Kelowna, her hometown, has a spawning channel and several wildlife parks. Swain explores the place, as well as the bodies of water in British Columbia to provide an interesting source of information for children. To equip them with knowledge and research skills, Swain introduces her first book, "THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE KOKANEE SALMON."
"THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE KOKANEE SALMON" is an educational book that talks about the stages in the life of the kokanee salmon, a land-locked sockeye salmon. The kokanee salmon eggs hatch during late winter and early spring. They swim to the lake to live and grow for about four years. On their fourth year, they will find the same river or creek where they were laid-this time, as adult spawners. The picture book also explains how these marine animals choose their mate, lay the eggs, fertilize the eggs and how they protect them from predators.
Swain feels the need to teach children animal life cycles so they will learn to protect and respect nature, the environment, as well as the animals that dwell therein. Packed with lively images taken by Swain herself, "THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE KOKANEE SALMON" will regale young readers and awaken their interest to explore the vast and colorful marine world.
