Joan Van Dyke Releases SOMERSAULT PATH

The backdrop of Joan Van Dyke's poems is a small town in Michigan during the Second World War. Although her tender years, living in an alcoholic family can be considered haunted, she found reassurance and inspiration in the rhythms, wonders and safety of nature. Breathing with real childhood memories, the narrative of "Somersault Path" (published by iUniverse) offers readers the author's insights as she traversed difficulties during her formative years.

The poems in "Somersault Path" are reflective moments of the author's childhood. As a child, growing up in a toxic home, Van Dyke sought refuge in the landscape surrounding her Michigan home. A favorite oak tree still stands where she spent lofty hours in summertime perched high above flowered gardens and apple trees overlooking Lake Michigan not far from the woods where she kept company with a large neighborhood of crows.

Van Dyke uses humor to explore the dark world of indifference and contradiction she confronted during her childhood. The poems in "Somersault Path" apply human attributes to objects and animals as they explore reality that stands out in the darkness just like the light of firefly.

Her poetry offers insight into the imaginary world of a child providing readers with a deeper viewpoint and appreciation of child awareness, resilience and psychology.

About the Author
Joan Van Dyke began writing poetry in grade school in Ludington, Michigan. She received her BA and an MA in theatre arts from the University of Arizona. She performed as an artist-in-the-schools, in Tucson, Los Angeles, Washington DC and Michigan. Now retired, "Somersault Path" is her first published book of poems.
