"West of Cayuga: A Historical Novel" (published by Archway Publishing) by Jim Little tells a fictionalized account of some of his own ancestors, the Littles, and their acquaintances from the Civil War era.

In the book, as Green Little, a Quaker farmer, his wife and their children try to begin a new life, he must leave his friend Old Jeb behind. Meanwhile, Jeb is battling just to survive in the antebellum South. He reluctantly leaves his wife and children, escaping to Indiana to establish a trade, hoping they can soon follow. As time passes and the Civil War begins, Green and Jeb each take up arms for their country, albeit on opposite sides. As the two men approach the battle of Gettysburg via separate roads, so do their futures.

An excerpt from "West of Cayuga":
Jebediah and his comrades made it to some sort of safety halfway up the hill, having lost some good men along the way. He was not even a regular soldier, but it seemed that a lot of the men stayed close to him when things heated up. They did what he directed, even the sergeant although the noncom still maintained his authority over them. It was not conscious effort either, just something that came out of him from deep down.

Jim Little is a 72-year-old retired businessman and avid historian who has spent many years researching the military history of his home state of North Carolina. He currently resides in North Carolina with his wife. He is the author of the nonfiction piece, "Fathers of the Greatest Generation: Nothing between Heaven and Hell, a true account of North Carolinians in the Great War."
