If there was a TV commercial about tour guiding it might go something like this: "Bored with your job? Love travel? Like working with people? Then add some excitement to your life and become a Tour Guide!"

Sounds like a dream job, right? Well, the answer is yes and no.

To tell the inside story, the award-winning team of Jeremy Perks and Jan Barrie of Global Gypsies Tours & Training have written "How to Be an Award-Winning Tour Guide (published by Xlibris AU)," a book with a difference that should be required reading for anyone in the tourism industry. This is no stuffy academic tome. It is easy-to-read, fun, educational, personalized, conversational, humorous and full of photos taken by the authors in real-life situations. It is loaded with insight, personal experiences, industry knowledge, anecdotes, hints, hands-on exercises and sound advice on how to become a successful guide. Recommended by leading academics, tour operators and tour guides, the book is designed for aspiring guides, those already working in the industry keen to brush up their skills, educators, students, and anyone considering starting their own tourism business.

Global Gypsies leads tours in Australia and overseas, and delivers training courses in four-wheel-driving and towing. The company also developed Australia's first practical short-course in tour guiding which won a prestigious tourism training award. The authors, who co-founded and run the company, wrote "How to Be an Award-Winning Tour Guide" to share their extensive knowledge and experience with those who cannot attend a course in person. Jan and Jeremy say: "The book can help transform guiding skills from basic to brilliant and help open new doors to one of the world's most exciting professions."
