Stewartville, Minn.

In order to cope with ongoing depression, author Jennifer Cunningham wrote her new book of poetry titled "Dark Angels: A Book of Sins" (published by AuthorHouse).

"When I was young I was influenced by a friend to write out my emotions," Cunningham says. "I struggled with my inner demons and I doubted my existence and purpose."

From the depths of depression to overcoming the life-altering mental illness, Cunningham's collection of poetry covers the gambit of emotions one feels when affected by depression. She says that in writing out her experiences, she was able to cope with, and ultimately triumph over, depression and its effects on her life as a mother and wife.

"I think that as social media and this new era of computers and technology takes over, people will forget how to just simply talk to each other," Cunningham says. "As this grows, we are going to be dealing with more suicides, more crime and, unfortunately, more forgotten, lost youth who do not know how to talk, open up and bleed, which means they will take out aggression, anger and hurt in more destructive ways."

Cunningham hopes her book will bring learning and understanding to those who experience depression and those who are outsiders to mental illness.

An excerpt from "Dark Angels":

"Alone, scared, crying
Thinking all about me dying
The blade pressed upon my skin
Praying for the strength to push it in"
