In "The Real Jesus" (published by CrossBooks), Jeffrey Waite's 2012 Christian fiction, Zechariah, a well-respected first-century journalist who is disgusted by religion, is sent on a journey requiring his utmost attention to that very subject. Waite is now launching a revived marketing campaign for "The Real Jesus."
Zechariah reports for the greater area of Israel, and his boss sends him to do a character study on the man currently enchanting the local population: Jesus. Zechariah thinks it will be just another assignment, but it turns out to be bigger than any story he could have imagined. Through interviews with those who know Jesus - including shepherds, a magi, Mary and Joseph, those known as disciples and even the taxpayer Zacchaeus - Zechariah begins to unearth the true nature of this man who claims to be a savior.
Waite believes Zechariah's journey, which takes him closer and closer to the realization of the enormity of Jesus' message, reflects the journey many people are on today. "Our society no longer holds firmly to the truth that Jesus is the only way to salvation," he says. "We tend to believe that we all find our own way. This book goes through many of those false beliefs that we as a culture have, which were also present in Jesus' time, and show how they are incorrect and how Jesus is the only way to salvation."
