Author Jeffrey L. Hatcher was struck by his first epileptic seizure when he was 27 years old, a condition with which he has courageously battled throughout the years. And because of this he has endeavored to create a book that will show readers on the severity of epilepsy and the strength of character it takes to face it.

"Tacking on the Styx" (published by AuthorHouse) tells a tale about a young man trying and ultimately failing to come to terms with epilepsy. Along the way the book discusses the psychology and biology of the disease and of concurrent amnesia. With this fictional tale of courage in the face of a debilitating condition the author beckons psychologists to better train themselves and become more involved in epilepsy treatment.

The book shows that epilepsy needs to be thought of as a mental illness for patients to get better or any psychological care. It also show how medical care is currently exclusively about seizure control and this circumstance needs to change. As only a patient can, the author brings the social, cognitive and physical trials of epilepsy to the reader, braiding medical essays with a fictional adventure.

About the Author
Jeffrey Hatcher grew up north of Boston, scarcely an hour away from the fictional town of Lenapek. At the age of 27, he entered a new world of emotion, personality and mental abilities after an hour of seizure erased much of his recent memories of where he was and what he had been doing. Persevering through a wide range of frequent seizures and surgical evaluation, he went on to earn his PhD in anthropology at Columbia University, working in both a genetics laboratory and in East Africa. He has used this experience to discuss the nature of professional accommodation for a mental disability and the day-to-day challenges of living with epilepsy.
