Using his sense of humor and his positive view of the absurdities of the world, Jef R. Huntsman relates his untimely, life-altering experience after suffering a heart attack in his new book titled Heart Attack, Yak Yak. A substantive volume revealing 10-plus years of aggressive medical treatments, medication cocktails, and lifestyle modifications, the author offers readers a unique perspective of finding humor even in the midst of painful and depressing situations.

According to MedlinePlus.com, over a million people in the United States have a heart attack every year and about half of them die. Heart attack or myocardial infarction occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked. Thus, starving the heart of oxygen and damaging its cells. Knowing the warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack is the key to prevent death. These include chest pain, shortness of breath, upper body pain or discomfort, and vomiting and dizziness.

Reflecting on his experience, Huntsman felt a need to help others through similar crises. Despite the terrible struggle, he saw the bright and humorous side of his condition and decided to put it down on paper. The author believes that these dire circumstances need not be regarded dismally. Rather, they can be taken lightly through optimism and positivity.

In this book, readers will follow a relatively young man's inspiring true-life story. With little warning, Huntsman suffered a cardiac arrest at 48 years old. He went through this at the same time his family was dealing with his son's brain tumor. When the gravity of the disease penetrated his mind, he thought it was all too sudden. There were already a lot of things he had to deal with in life and the last thing he wanted to acquire was a heart disease. As days passed, he found the humor in his hospitalization, recovery, getting to know the pharmacist by name, and the new adventures his heart takes him through.

"I believe this book makes us as humans realize how similar and fragile our lives are," the author notes. "Hopefully it helps each of us try to laugh at ourselves and our situations."

In facing medical trials-or virtually any trial in life-Huntsman heartens readers to face them with a positive, laughing attitude. Written with sly humor and stirring insights, Heart Attack Yak, Yak is an uplifting memoir for anyone who has been through major hospitalization and recovery or to those who know someone undergoing the same situation.
