Author Don Steele says that only 10 percent of family-owned-and-operated businesses survive and advance into the third generation. The Shepler family's ferry business for Mackinac Island, Michigan, makes up part of this 10 percent.
Authors Jean R. Beach and Steele tell the story of the Shepler's business in the new biography, "Undefeated: The True Story of How the Family-Owned Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry Service Survived and Advanced through Three Generations" (published by AuthorHouse).
One part case study and one part family history, "Undefeated" chronicles the Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry business in its entirety, beginning with its conception in 1945. The business has since gone from a small snack bar operation to a full-blown ferry service with multiple vessels under the Shepler name.
Throughout "Undefeated," readers watch as Captain William H. Shepler takes his dream of running a business and turns it into a booming family venture. The authors draw from their knowledge of the region and business to provide further insights into the Shepler's success and the Mackinac straits.
