Picking up where author Jason Leclerc's fragmented narrative "Momentitiousness" left off, "Black Kettle: Novellas Connected" (published by Archway Publishing) explores the manifestations of hope and deceit in the human experience. He employs a new genre he created after being frustrated by the lack of depth and nuance surrounding historical and cultural discourse. With the peaceful life and tragic death of a Cheyenne chief, Black Kettle, as the connecting tissue, he slices through current topics like gender, sexuality, guns, religion and science. "I needed to present new ways to contextualize the biggest issues of our day," Leclerc says.
In the novella "Black Kettle," readers witness the moments immediately preceding, during and after two galactic earth-shattering events: The Joy-campaign and The Day of Fire. In "Trayvon," they witness the moments when young men discover the shifting tangents connected by sexuality, love and family. Finally, in "The Nola Trilogy," readers witness the moments where carnal pleasure morphs into sentimentality, heartbreak and rebirth.
"While the stories are collected into Novellas, the Novellas are, themselves, connected by a single thread," he says. "It's more than just connected stories. It is essay, history, primary-sourced archives, poetry and prose."
Having promoted his first book by touring through Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Memphis, Tampa and Orlando, Leclerc is kicking off a new tour for "Black Kettle" in his hometown, Daytona Beach, with stops already set for Toronto, Miami and New York.
