Janet S. Kleinman Shares Family's Immigration in New Release

Author Janet S. Kleinman was always fascinated by the determination of immigrants, like her parents, who came to America at the beginning of the 20th century. Their need to succeed and love for their new country allowed them to contribute to the American Dream. Kleinman explores these individuals in her new historical fiction, "Good-Bye Russia, Hello America" (published by iUniverse), which she says is poignant as immigration becomes a hot topic.

The Sidowitz family arrives in Boston in 1923. Jacov and Reuven (now Jack and Rubin) with their mother, Ida, try to make a life for themselves, but Ida bemoans the fate of her oldest son, Yehuda, who stayed behind in Russia. After a decade of celebrations, romance and prosperity, the Depression followed by World War II changes everything. Jack is drafted, trained as an interpreter and parachuted into Europe. As he is exposed to the horrors of WWII, he continues searching for his brother in the former labor and concentration camps in Germany. Unable to find him, Jack returns to America and his wife, Bela, as WWII ends. He joins the Jewish fleet, financed by the Mafia, and helps smuggle Jewish survivors into Palestine. He wonders if Yehuda could be among those survivors.

I'm sitting on an old freighter waiting to start our journey. I'm excited, and so are the other vets who have volunteered for this mission. Here in Lisbon, with Uncle Tony's money, we have found everything we need for us and the survivors we hope to save.
