James R. Glenn's interest in local history served as inspiration for his book, "The Fifth Judicial Circuit of Illinois" (published by Trafford Publishing), a historical account of the Fifth Judicial Circuit which covers the Illinois counties of Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Edgar and Vermilion.

"This book will appeal to readers who have an interest in how our current Illinois legal system has evolved and also to readers who are related to or interested in the many individuals who served," says Glenn.

Glenn starts with the creation of the fifth circuit counties after statehood in 1818 and continues with the establishment of the circuit in 1897. He gives a detailed list of the judges and state's attorneys who served and the importance of various elections. He also provides biographies for the judges and state's attorneys who went on to become senators, congressmen, and even governors.

Glenn says, "It helps explain why our legal system is in its present form." He hopes readers will take away "an appreciation for the efforts many individuals have put forth to serve in our legal system."
