James A. Gauthier Critiques Public School System in New Book

Author James A. Gauthier exposes some of the biggest problems in the American public school system through his new novel, "Unacceptable Expectations: A Young Teachers Struggle with Conformity" (published by Trafford Publishing).

When school teacher Rachel joins the teachers union, she expects to be among like-minded individuals who want to help children excel. What she finds is conformity and a pledge to uphold mediocrity. Determined to help her students, Rachel steps outside the norm, and her students succeed.

The teachers union, however, will stop at nothing to halt Rachel's progress. After being forced out of her job and losing her leg in an attempt on her life, Rachel starts her own school, employing 2,500 teachers. When the union tries to lure her teachers away, Rachel must stand up for what she believe in.

"Rachel teaches the reader that anything is possible if you don't quit along the way," Gauthier says.

Through Rachel's school, Gauthier presents a method of teaching he believes would work on a larger scale. He intends to not only present a criticism of the current public school system, but also posit a potential solution.
