BELDEN, Miss. -
What's more exciting than a motorcycle trip from a small town in Mississippi to the Arctic Circle? Traveling via motorcycle to Mexico and South America a few years later - life-altering events this new book ably describes. Author Jacquelyn C. Allen lovingly puts pen to paper to tell the story of Dan Mathews, a friend who encountered interesting and unexpected situations every step of the way.
"Zookymoon," which serves as part memoir and part travelogue, relays the sights and sounds of Mathews, who began his unforgettable trip in the small town of Tupelo, Miss., and traveled as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as the tip of South America and points in between. His journey to the Arctic Circle included encounters with bears and interesting characters, but that was nothing compared to traveling south of the border. Simply getting through border crossings can be hazardous, with bribes and quick-thinking essential requirements. Luckily he has a steady companion to help him - a sexy motorcycle known as Zookymoon.
Photos from such places as Honduras, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile and Machu Picchu help set the scene for Mathews' trips. He stays everywhere from a second-rate hotel and dilapidated campground to a bordello complete with red velvet draped everywhere. Mathews, who has been riding motorcycles all of his life, freely shares his thirst for adventure and love of his motorcycle. Playful comments the author imagines Zookymoon might say enliven this already entertaining tale of wanderlust.
Author Jacquelyn C. Allen has a master's degree in history from Mississippi State University and a history degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. She lives in Tupelo, Miss.
