On June 3, 2015, the U.S. House of Representatives made great strides to address the growing number of rape kit backlogs in cities across the United States. According to the Joyful Heart Foundation, the FY16 spending bill included a provision of $45 million to address the number of untested rape kits.
Author Jack Lorenz, a staunch supporter of rape kit backlog reform, shows how DNA evidence found in rape kits can help solve cases in his new novel, "Nottingham Harbor" (published by AuthorHouse).
More than one serial rapist are stalking women in cities across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, but so far, no one has been able to tie these crimes to the same person or even prove that the same person is committing these rapes.
When Sergeant Bill Simpson is instated as head of a task force of state troopers, it will be up to him to use DNA evidence to connect these rapes and identify the rapist. With the help of Mattie Greene, a logical math teacher and Bill's love interest, he will have to solve the crimes before another woman is harmed. After the rapists are identified there are chases interrupted by several secondary crimes, just to keep things interesting.
Filled with action and suspense, "Nottingham Harbor" calls for a discussion about rape investigations and how analyzing more rape kits could lead to more prosecutions. Through his book, Lorenz hopes to inspire readers to contact their state representatives and speak out for change. He also hopes the reader just enjoys the story.
