When Jack Flynn was a young boy, he knew his father was abusive but there wasn't anything he could do about it. Now, after living most of his life with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, Flynn has devoted his adult life to helping others recover from domestic violence.

"I survived child abuse and now I'm coming to terms with my creator," Flynn said. "When I finally got to a place where I had peace, I thought it would be a shame to not record my journey from despair to hope."

In Flynn's new book "Smash-Mouth Jesus: A Memoir - God's Answer to Violence," he opens up about his childhood in an abusive home and how his experience followed him to adulthood. Although his past has affected many parts of his life, he credits his faith in God for pulling him through it all.

"I got to the point where suicide seemed like my only way out, but my love for truth was the one thread that kept me hanging on until I finally began to prosper in a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ," Flynn said. "Once I fully understood what Christ expected of me, I began to heal."

"Smash-Mouth Jesus" also highlights the importance of closure and justice to arriving at a healthy mental state. Flynn says that Jesus was a warrior, not a pacifist, and he cares about justice as well as forgiveness.

"Violence brings a deep despair to its victim, yet Jesus has an even deeper message of hope and redemption that needs to be heard," Flynn said. "This book is a record of my spiritual journey that I hope will help others in similar situations. Most of all I wanted to give my daughter a story from which she can continue to build upon in her own life."
