Irvin Boring Relives His WWII Military Experiences in Candid Memoir

In his war memoir, "Runt to Warrior" (published by Trafford Publishing), which is getting a revived marketing push in 2013, author Irvin Boring opens up about his memories of serving as a soldier in World War II, sharing stories in an effort to find peace with his past.

"Runt to Warrior" is an abbreviated memoir of Boring's first 17 years and 10 months of life. The childhood portion contains events and episodes that have a direct bearing and impact on his being able to function with dignity and success in the role of a United States Army infantry combatant for a period of 101 days in the war against the German army during World War II.

"First Lieutenant Evans who is holding both positions as company commander and first platoon leader, asks for two volunteers to go look for the two scouts that have not returned by the designated time. I again break the rule of, 'Never Volunteer;' by standing and make my speech, 'All these other men have wives and loved ones to think about. If I get killed my mom will cry, my dad will be proud of me, my brothers and my sister will say that's too bad, and my girlfriend will find someone else, so I'll go alone.'"

Boring notes that all of the stories he recounts in the book are completely true. "Students I lecture to are fascinated by the stories I tell them," he says. "Former military men tell me they have read 'Runt to Warrior' six and seven times."
