Tampa Prep is excited to have Markus Zusak, the best-selling author of The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger, return to Tampa Prep on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Mr. Zusak will speak at 7 p.m. in the Peifer Library at Tampa Prep with a book signing hosted by Inkwood Books immediately following. The evening event and book signing are open to the public and free of charge. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to hear this gifted novelist speak about his experiences.
After releasing his first three books, The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe and Getting the Girl, Mr. Zusak was recognized with many awards in both the United States and his home Australia. Marcus Zusak's next release, I Am The Messenger, received a number of awards including the Printz Honor.
The release of The Book Thief in 2005 is by far Markus Zusak's most notable accomplishment, having held the top spot on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, the New York Times Bestseller List and many international best-selling lists. In 2013, The Book Thief was turned into a movie directed by Award-winning Brian Percival, starring Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush, Academy Award nominee Emily Watson and other emerging new actors.
Mr. Zusak will address the entire student body and then spend the day working with Upper School students in writing workshops. During his 2011 visit to Tampa Prep, he inspired students with his approachable demeanor and enthusiasm, gaining a following of devoted local fans.
English teacher and Department Head Stephanie Cardillo said, "We are so lucky at Tampa Prep to host many amazing speakers, but Markus stood out among all of them. He was a superstar -a superb storyteller who opened his big, generous heart to our students on his last visit. He was patient with them, he listened and he cared. We are so happy for his return."
Tampa Prep could not be more excited to host this incredible talent and provide the opportunity for the Tampa Prep and Tampa Bay communities to learn from this esteemed novelist and speaker. Having read the book, many Tampa Prep students are overjoyed to have the chance to hear where his inspiration for the book came from, as well as ask many questions about his writing style and how he became an award-winning writer.
The Guardian calls The Book Thief "a novel of breathtaking scope, masterfully told." The New York Times: "Brilliant and hugely ambitious...the kind of book that can be life-changing." The Age: "an original, moving, beautifully written book."
