Ingrid Watson Miller and Margaret Lindsay Morris, both of whom are professors dedicated to teaching the Spanish language at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, have completed their book "The Devil's Nose": a gripping and potent piece of historical fiction that illustrates the strength of human kind to overcome any obstacles.
When asked what inspired their work, Miller and Morris stated: "The inspiration for writing this book came from Luz Argentina Chiriboga, the only Ecuadorian woman of African ancestry to have published novels. Because she is not widely known outside of her country, the authors have translated one of her novels in order to provide the American public with an opportunity to hear her voice and to obtain a perspective of Ecuadorian culture and history through her writings. Both authors have done research and presented papers on several of Chiriboga's works. Dr. Watson Miller's dissertation is a study of Chriboga's first three novels, which provide a voice to the young Afro-Ecuadorian women in three different time periods."
Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, this poignant tale transports the reader to Ecuador in the late nineteenth century. Here, thousands of migrant workers from Jamaica have come in search of a better life. In order to fulfill their ambitions, they must construct a railroad through the Andes to connect Guayaquil and Quito, under the order of President Eloy Alfaro. The feat is perilous and will test the resolve of the many workers. Their riveting tale is both emotional and inspiring.
Readers who wish to experience this spirited work can purchase "The Devil's Nose" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.
