According to the U.K. Centre for Mental Health, more than 11,000 people are detained in police stations as a "place of safety" every year in mental health cases. But what happens when an officer is the one with a mental illness?
Author and former constable Paul Durston turns this scenario into the main plot of his new novel, "In the View of a Constable."
"I spent 15 years as a street cop and 15 years in a desk position helping to organize the force," Durston said, "Needless to say I have seen plenty of dark effects from this work on my fellow officers."
"In the View of a Constable" follows one officer whose investigations bring his childhood traumas to the surface. As he gets deeper into the case he begins to become aware of his own schizophrenia and the possibility that he may be more involved in the crime than he anticipated.
"There are so many shows and books that concentrate on giving the inside scoop of investigation or analysis techniques," Durston said, "I want people to see an insider's perspective of what this kind of work can do to an officer's mind."
The psychological struggles and stark realism make "In the View of a Constable" essential for any crime-novel enthusiast.
