How to Avoid Being a Victim of Sexual Assault and Other Crimes or Recover More Quickly If You Are  Image

VERNON, British Columbia, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ Few life events are as awful to contemplate as being a victim of a robbery, sexual assault, burglary or perhaps the murder of a loved one. Having worked with victims of crime and families of murder victims, Gillian Padgett has a wealth of information to pass on to people who want to avoid falling victim to crime as well as to those who have already faced that calamity but want to recover more fully.

Padgett was motivated to train with Victim Support in the United Kingdoma nonprofit that works with people who have lived through traumatic eventsafter her best friend was murdered and she watched that woman's family struggle in the aftermath. She then went on to spend the next 25 years of her life studying and specializing in stress relief, recovery and resilience.

Among Padgett's tips are:

  • Know how criminals choose their victims and avoid embodying those traits. Criminals look for women who walk aimlessly, seem distracted by conversations on their cell phones or pay more attention to what's in shop windows than to their surroundings.
  • Build up your intuition muscles. Don't ignore your gut if it tells you a situation is dodgy, get away from it as fast as you can. There are exercises that can help people develop their intuition.
  • After a crime takes place, break the stress response by breathing more slowly, shaking out the stress through your fingers, hands, legs and feet and drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid isolation which can lead to loneliness. Find one or two understanding friends you can trust to spend time with.
  • Reset your neurological pathways by thinking about the criminal event in a new way recognizing what you did well, and what you could have done differently. Use this information to create a new version in your head that you can replay until it becomes familiar.
