This week, the Avian Kingdom: Feathered Tales published the third bilingual children's book: "Pelican Sky".
Pelican Sky, along with the other books in the series, is written to champion character building, family values and environmental stewardship.
The series- and its subsequent characters- was first printed this June and has its conceptual roots from their iPhone app, a game launched in 2012. Throughout the game, players navigate their avian heroes through wind turbines as they attempt to return safely home. After thousands of downloads and garnering over 18,000 Facebook fans, parents reached out to the creators asking for more activities for their children.
The team responded, not only with more content, characters, and stories, but with a boots-on-the-ground approach where the characters literally leap from the page. In addition to the series' appearances at the Texas Book Festival in Austin, a reading with the author at a Katy Elementary and kicking off literacy week at the Boys and Girls Club in Austin, the team traveled from Nicaragua all the way to Minnesota over the summer.
The team reads the stories to the grouped youth that are all-ears. Through this interaction with the children, while donning the Captain Eagle and Dr. Hoots mascots and reading the books aloud, the team gets to experience the direct effect that their efforts have on Spanish and English literacy, the cornerstone of not only the children's education but also the future of their lives.
The Avian Kingdom traveled as far as Minnesota to help support John Karger, founder of Last Chance Forever, The Bird of Prey Conservancy. All proceeds from book sales at the fair were donated to John Karger's organization. In order to have a growing impact on the community, the Avian Kingdom is looking for volunteers and organizations that support literacy and multi-lingual education.
