King Arthur was the legendary king of England during the fifth and sixth centuries who was said to have led Britain's defense against the Saxon invaders. Under the tutelage of his mentor, Merlin, the Knights of the Roundtable, and his magical sword Excalibur, he would become England's greatest king. His legend has been told for generations, with much of his history being stories of folklore. Entering the discussion of this historical figure comes The Quest for King Arthur (published by Trafford Publishing) by James Frost.
"Until now, the Arthurian debate has been centered on interpreting the documentation, however this book shifts the emphasis onto the facts and key events of the period," explains Frost, "especially the military and political situation, examining not just what happened by how and why it happened."
Frost explains that the accepted interpretation of King Arthur's history is the result of honest mistakes made over a period of centuries as the information was passed down from one generation to another. But what if there were actually very few honest mistakes and that most of the problems were created deliberately as the warring factions attempted to present themselves as the good guys and their rivals as the bad guys.
The second half of the book accepts the premise that there are both mythic and historical elements in the Arthur legends and seeks to separate one from another.
Historians and fans of the legendary tales of King Arthur are sure to enjoy The Quest for King Arthur.
