Helen O. Bigelow Announces New Book on Hardships of WWII Victims

Helen O. Bigelow was inspired to write "Coffee Grounds and Potato Peeling Pancakes: The Garbage We Ate to Live" (published by AuthorHouse) after hearing stories from foreign war survivors, reviewing the scrapbook she had maintained during World War II and reading the war letters she received from her uncles.

When you know you would be killed if you were caught, it takes incredible courage to sneak out in the night to dig in the garbage for scraps to keep from starving. These and other challenges were part of everyday life for millions of concentration camp victims. Many around them did not survive the atrocities of World War II, but the survivors found in this book fought hard for their right to live.

"This is a collection of experiences telling how each supplemented their meager food in their own clever ways to keep from starving," explains Bigelow. "Fear of the concentration camps made them do desperate acts to avoid contact with the enemy." Each story is also accompanied by photographs of the survivors and the conditions inside the camps.
