Helen Evrard is a physician who found herself, at the age of fifty-eight, in a locked ward in a psychiatric hospital under suicide watch, unable to reverse the severe depression that resulted from chronic illness and loss. While in the hospital, she discovered the power of positive words and was inspired to explore this in her new book, "Positive Matters: Words, Quotations, and Stories to Heal and Inspire" (published by iUniverse).
"Positive Matters" was written as a tool to empower personal transformation, and is designed to stimulate reflection, self-examination, and discussion. Using eighty words, Evrard guides readers toward a new viewpoint on life. She opens up each word, revealing its significance with a brief definition and etymology, then follows with inspirational quotes from both famous and lesser known people. She then presents a short, personal reflection on the word, sharing the meanings, lessons, and valuable insights that arose out of the experience of loss and renewal.
Here's an excerpt from "Positive Matters," in which Evrard reflects on the word "perfect":
"This word's etymology allows me to see it in a different way. I now apply perfect to challenging situations and setbacks that come my way almost every day. They give me the chance to see things through as best I can at the time. They provide opportunities to learn a new strength or to be grateful for the blessings I already have. The beauty of this word is that it now becomes distinctly achievable - we can all become perfect in everything we do my simply doing our very best in the circumstances that are given us."
Evrard thinks of "Positive Matters" as a tool to help people combat their negative feelings. "I hope readers develop a new or renewed appreciation for words, their meaning, origin, and usage, and that they can now see old, common words in a new light," she says. "I would like people to use these words to see their own lives and problems from a different and more optimistic viewpoint."
