"He Moved West with America: The Life and Times of Wm. Carr Lane: 1789-1863" (published by Archway Publishing) is the biography of William Carr Lane, first mayor of St. Louis. Author William C. Carson, the great-great grandson of Lane, offers insights into life during the first half of the 19th century as America expanded west.

Carson pulls from family stories and hundreds of letters written by Lane to his wife and children, which provides a unique view of the life and views of an accomplished man affected by major changes in cultural attitudes and developing technology.

According to Carson, the book provides "a better understanding of American history and the pleasure of reading about a fascinating man."

An excerpt from "He Moved West with America":
Wm. Carr Lane's restlessness had not been dampened during the first year and a half of his marriage, but it again seemed likely that it would be when he, Mary, and the five-month-old Anne settled in St. Louis. The city was still on the urban frontier, with a mixed and often violent population prone to barroom fights amongst river men and duels between lawyers.
