The South China Morning Post, on July 8, 2013, reported in Hong Kong that Beijing's Communist Party magazine Qiushi (Seeking Truth) noted China's current system of power succession "resembled the historical 'abdication system' and it had proved successful, with the past three generations of communist leaders overseeing the unprecedented economic 'miracle.'"
This conclusion is remarkably similar to those presented in author Keith K. C. Hui's "Helmsman Ruler: China's Pragmatic Version of Plato's Ideal Political Succession System in The Republic" (published by Trafford Singapore). In his book, Hui points out that Plato suggests those who have come through the tests and final trials will become rulers in rotation and then depart when they have brought up successors like themselves.
"Chinese rulers are purposively trained for statecraft, lead the state in rotation, and depart after having brought up their successors," Hui says. "The only system that can be described as similar to the Chinese practice of once-in-a-decade transition of power is Plato's rotational philosopher ruler ideal. A comparison shows that three common features and two pragmatic variations can be found between the Chinese system and Plato's ideal. And this system, if well institutionalized, can achieve an advantage that democracy can produce - regular and peaceful handover of authority."
Readers interested in this idea can discover the book for themselves, when it is featured at the 20th Beijing International Book Fair, August 28-September 1, 2013.
