Supporting a growing movement among parents and educators, Gryphon House announced today the launch of a new book that encourages outdoor play. Learning Is in Bloom: Cultivating Outdoor Explorations, by Ruth Wilson, PhD, offers clear strategies for incorporating outdoor play experiences into a young child's day. With 40 hands-on activities, Learning Is in Bloom illustrates how to engage young children in investigating nature, both indoors and outdoors, on the school grounds, and on excursions around the neighborhood.
"Connecting young children with nature should focus more on fostering a sense of wonder and promoting positive dispositions than on teaching facts, meeting academic benchmarks or achieving standards-based competencies," Wilson said. "While fostering a love of nature is a major goal, the activities also promote all areas of early childhood education and development."
Through her descriptions and full-color photos, Dr. Wilson outlines how scientific investigations, mathematical thinking, art explorations, literacy and social-emotional development are all enhanced when done in the natural environment. The book also provides suggestions on how to include children with special needs and on how to manage children' fears.
Learning Is in Bloom will be released in June 2016 from Gryphon House, Inc., the leading publisher of educational resources for teachers.
